The Dot-Quarter Note Click in 12/8 Thread

Recommended Posts

UPDATED: read this first, but download the version shown later in the thread.

An updated version of this environment is located a few posts down. Meanwhile, this instructions in this post are still worth a read.

--------------------------------------------------

For those who don't know, Logic has had a long-standing omission: there is no provision to get a dotted quarter note click from the Klopfgeist when working in 12/8, 6/8, etc.) But I've come up with a scheme to make this happen! To add this functionality to your song...

• open the attached file [actually, the updated version below] and copy the macro with CMD-C. What you're seeing there is the "Clicks and Ports" layer ("'C&P') of the Environment).

• in your song or template, open two environment windows: one showing the C&P layer, the other showing the Mixer layer.

• in the C&P layer, CMD-V (paste)

• cable the output of your MIDI Click icon to the macro

• click/hold on the top output of the MIDI monitor (the red cable with the 'hammerhead' top) and drag it to the Klopfgeist instrument in the Mixer layer.

• final step -- this is important -- open your Metronome prefs and untick the Beat checkbox.

Out of the box, this will work for 12/8. To make it work for 6/8, select the Delay Line and change the number of repeats to "1" in the parameters section on the left. For 9/8, change it to "2". [ EDIT: see updated version below which provides a menu for selecting different time signatures -- much easier! ]

Note: if you're working strictly in one of these meters this should work like a charm. This scheme may not work well at all if you're working in mixed meters. But for swing charts, renditions of Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring and so on it should work just fine. :mrgreen:

Hey Guys,

I made a new version that will save you the trouble of having to change the delay line repeat value when working in different time sigs. Now you can use a menu to select the time sig you're working in and you're good to go.

In the attached file I've consolidated the programming into an environment "macro" called Dot-1/4 Click Maker (Ski V1.0). All you have to do to incorporate this into your songs is copy the macro itself, paste it into your song, and cable it as before:

Your MIDI Click--->Macro--->Klopfgeist (Instrument 256)

Oh, and disabling the the Beat checkbox in the Metronome settings still applies.

Enjoy!
