ncw
Hi, sorry if this has been covered before, but I'm in a position where I have to give a score to some musicians which I have created in Logic Pro X (using my midi keyboard) Does logic account for limitations of various instruments, e.g. brass instruments? I am trained as a pianist but I am not really familiar with the ways in which some other instruments are notated. I hope this makes sense, and apologies if it has been covered before. Thanks! David Nahmani
If you mean the limitations in pitch range? No, it does not. This may help? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Range_(music)
ncw
I mean if I was to record a string or horn or whatever part on my midi keyboard, is Logic clever enough to know the limitations of say, a viola or a trumpet and score it as such? obviously a piano score is different to a trumpet or viola score. this may make less sense than the original post
David Nahmani
By limitations do you mean the range of notes that the instrument can play?
ncw
yes, also the polyphony etc
David Nahmani
Then no. But some instruments do, for example some sampled instrument will respond only to notes within their realistic range. You can still however program notes outside that range, they just won't sound.
ncw
So, a trumpet note that is below its range won't show up on the score etc. OK great, thank you
David Nahmani
So, a trumpet note that is below its range won't show up on the score etc. Yes, it will show up on the score. It just won't produce any sound for SOME instruments. It all depends how the instrument is programmed. It's exactly like in real life: nothing prevents you from writing any note you want on a score for any instrument you want, only some instrument will not be able to play those notes.
