Same room with same mic but different (terrible) sound on vocals all of the sudden

Hey!

So I’ve been clueless about something for a while now. Suddenly my recorded vocals sound wetter more roomy and also a little muddy although I’m recording in the same room with the same mic. I’m recording in the closet at home and the vocals have always sounded dry and clear up until recently. Could it be something with the preference settings that accidentally got changed? Someone who’s experienced the same thing? It’s not the mic btw because I bought a new one thinking that was the problem and the exact same thing has happened with my new mic (so to say the sound changed after a few sessions from dry and nice to muddy and wet).

I know this is a long one, sorry folks!

My first thought, as well. There's a classic Kool & the Gang track (IIRC) recorded at the church in NYC that has an awesome, roomy drum sound on it — one of the overheads was mounted backwards by accident.

That's awesome. I love stories like that, of happy accidents, that ended up making it onto the album.

I tried to find the anecdote — I'm pretty sure it's in the fantastic book "Temples of Sound - Inside the Great Recording Studios" by Jim Cogan and William Clark — and it wasn't K & the Gang, and it wasn't the Church.

Ah well. Great excuse to re-read that book.

Intent was to show that flipping a mic backwards happens in the best of houses. :-)

not exactly on topic, but am reminded of my cousin, who (many years ago) bought a kodak camera, and went to europe. she took lots of pictures. when she got home, and got the photos developed, they were all the same blurry image... as she'd taken every picture with the lens facing her.

she showed them to us ("here's the bridge of my nose at the eiffel tower, here's the bridge of my nose at big ben" etc). she told me she'd thought it odd that the viewfinder made everything smaller...
