Hi Forum.

I won't be using the Apogee Duet interface for any external recording, It will just be used as an interface.

I would like to know the differences if any between the original (silver) and the apogee duet 2.

I will be using it to hook up my midi controller and headphones along with mixing.

Thanks in advance.

Apogee Duets don't have Midi inputs. They just accepts audio signal.

Your midi controller would have to go to another USB port if it has one.

Besides that, the original duet is firewire, the duet 2 USB.

Don't know if the original duet is compatible with OS X Sierra. Might wanna double check its compatibility.

I am using a Firewire Duet (older version) with Sierra without any problems but my Macbook Pro has a Firewire port (mid-2012 non retina).

There are a few subtle differences between the two models connection wise:

The old model has only one stereo output (the headphones are hard-wired to the main output) and they're unbalanced; the new model had two separate stereo outputs and the mains are balanced.

The old model breakout cable has 4 input connectors: two are balanced (cannon type) and two are phone jacks for instruments whereas the new model has only two universal connectors (combined cannon and phone).
