Mellotron_consolidated.caf is absolutely caning my memory!

What is this Mellotron_consolidated.caf File, that is taking up a significant amount of memory?

For example:

New Project > 44.1 kHz > 24 fps > Dolby Atmos > 7.1.2 > Software Instrument > Surround > Monitoring Format: Binaural

I save Blank Song with any/different MIDI instrument plugin (MERCURY-4, in this example) = 1.7 MB.

I save blank song with the Vintage Mellotron instrument = 244.6 MB. see below:

“What in the blue blazes is going on here now?” This is just a blank session!

At the ‘rate this is going’ I will buying a Samsung X5 every week! - I haven’t got the money for that!

Please, correct me if I”m wrong, but: “Has Mellotron, somehow, evolved to become a very, very MEGA powerful plugin since 10.6.3?”

However, If I ‘Show Mixer’ and replace the ‘Vintage Mellotron’ with ‘Vintage Electro Piano’ for example - and then Save as - the Memory will = 1.7 MB

However, this is not always the case. Take this example below, which includes a song with MIDI and AUDIO content:

Sometimes I can’t get rid of this ‘Mellotron_consolidated.caf File’ (and the ridiculous amount of memory it yields), unless I:

1. Show Package contents > Delete Mellotron_consolidated.caf.

2. Re-load the same Song; which includes the deleted Mellotron_consolidated.caf.

3. Instantiate another MIDI instrument (MERCURY-4), on this track - i.e.: where the Vintage Mellotron was originally instantiated.

4. Save Song. Memory is NORMAL. 1.7 MB.

5. However, Save with Mellotron instantiated and the Memory ‘goes through the roof.’ 244.6 MB

However, even If I ‘Show Mixer’ and replace the ‘Vintage Mellotron’ with ‘Vintage Electro Piano’ for example - and then Save as - the Memory will still = 244.6 MB

I cannot get rid of this ridiculous amount of memory, unless, I ‘Show Package contents > Delete Mellotron_consolidated.caf’ and then instantiate another MIDI Instrument and ‘save as.’ (See step 1.)

The step above, must be implemented, otherwise the MB will show 244.6 MB

It seems Logic shows a different behaviour towards a blank session, compared to a session which includes MIDI and Audio content!

That's just the size of the sample: the Mellotron_consolidated.caf sample used by the Mellotron instrument is 242.8 MB.

There's nothing extraordinary with a sample-based instrument being that size, even though as you found out, others can be much smaller.

For example, in Logic Pro, the Hang Drum Ping sample is 363.1 MB. Studio Alt Sax 1 is 554.6 MB. Studio Cellos is 891.5 MB, and the Slow Jam Kit is 499.9 MB.

Oh, I see now!

Thanks for the swift responses.

Anything else in logic that yields MEGA MB's?

Also, if I want to save Vintage Mellotron (without caning the memory), I follow the advice of fuzzfilth?

Or, will Vintage Mellotron always yield that kind of memory? If so, I think it would be best to sample the individual Mellotron instrument - it would save a lot of memory!

thanks

If you use the instrument Vintage Mellotron in a project on your computer, there is no need to re-save the actual file Mellotron_consolidated.caf containing its samples, as it is in your sample library already.

If, however, you want to take the entire project to another computer, into a studio with no internet access, then you might want to save the project with its samples.

sample the individual Mellotron instrument

That would mean to sample the sample of a sample, which sounds, I dunno, grotesque...

BTW, the entire instrument library on your computer is around 70 Gigabytes, so there is no need to be upset by an instrument taking 240MB.

So why does my memory still show 244.6 MB - even though I have implemented 'save as' and REPLACED it over the top of the Vintage Mellotron with MERCURY-4?

It should show 1.7 MB.

Why is the Mellotron_consolidated.caf File still there? - surely, it should have been replaced by the MERCURY-4.

If I replaced the song that showed 244.6 MB with a 'save as' and replaced it with MERCURY-4 - the new reading should be 1.7 MB??

Yes or no?

Just for the sake of it, I have created a new, empty 44.1kHz project, loaded Mellotron in Surround, recorded a few MIDI notes and Save As... as Package, with all media options checked. The resulting single file is 460kB in size and does not contain any samples. So please tell exactly how and what you save with which options checked and unchecked.

You have to select "Include Apple Sound Library Content" in your save dialog.

Logic 10.7 / Big Sur 11.6.1

This is my process:

File > New from template > Close > Empty Project > 44.1 kHz > 24 fps > Dolby Atmos > 7.1.2 > Choose > Create > Instantiate Vintage Mellotron > 3D Object Planner > Save as

So tell me... Where am I going wrong?

This is one solitary Software Instrument also (just the one)

Is this operating under the correct parameters also:

2016581426_Screenshot2021-10-26at19_07_58.thumb.png.f6bf80ea641e85f47a85d8d087c5386f.png

Theoretically, I could exceed 10 GB on one song, if I choose to instantiate more Software Instruments then - am I right to assume this?

That's outrageous - I haven't got the money to spend-out on a SSD every month, especially a 1TB Samsung X5.

Surely this has got to be a mistake... It's like a nightmare - who has even got that kind of money?

Can anyone please tell me a way to circumvent this dilemma?

thanks

Everything you describe behaves as expected. The question is, why would you want to include Apple Sound Library Content with every project you save? You're making multiple duplicates of content that is already present on your system, one duplicate for every project you save.

So as Christian suggested earlier, disable that setting. Your hard drive (and your wallet) will thank you for it. :)

Hmmm, I feel very, very stupid now!

I Saved As Vintage Mellotron:-

I have unchecked: 'Include Apple Sound Library Content' and now memory is 540 KB

So if I have MIDI and Audio Files featuring in a song - I check just the Audio Files only when 'Save As'

Man, have I been getting myself worked up.

Thank you so much!

Yes. MIDI regions don't actually care, they're always saved within the project file itself, you don't have to select anything. For audio files, just check Audio Files in the Save As dialog, correct.

Thank you so much!

You're welcome! :)
