Studio162A
I still have USB dongle for Emagic's Logic 6. Aside from nostalgia, is there any reason to continue holding onto this relic? Jim
blinkofani
I still keep my Logic 7-era dongle because I bought upgrades to Logic 8 and 9. If I ever want to use those versions, I'll have to plug the dongle to authorize the software in addition to the serial number. If that's not your case, there's no real reason to keep it. des99
It's also used to authenticate the last Mac (beta) version of SoundDiver.
musos
In addition to the above, if you have old Logic songs (e.g. from v3 or v4, then you can open them in Logic 7 and re-save. This allows you to then open the old songs in Logic Pro X.
des99
Yes indeed, LP7 is an essential conversion stage to bring very old songs forward...
fisherking
i use mine (along with a much-hated and now abandoned ilok) to lift the front of my laptop to a better angle; so definitely worth keeping...
David Nahmani
I still have USB dongle for Emagic's Logic 6. Aside from nostalgia, is there any reason to continue holding onto this relic? None that I can think of. I recently disposed of about 20 Logic dongles that I hadn't used in several years.

Tom TTJ
Thanks to all. I appreciate your time. Jim Hey Jim. I'm looking for an old Logic XS Key, in order to open some old projects. Don't suppose you still have yours? Cheers, Tom
Studio162A
Just looked and..yes I do! It's black with "Emagic" embossed on it. I have no idea what vintage it is nor what versions of Logic it might work with. Jim
des99
Mine is dark blue. Blue was very much the colour of emagic, and their arch enemies Steinberg were red.... ying and yang, and all that! ☺️
David Nahmani
First there was the Emagic ADB dongle. Then the Emagic USB dongle. Then the Apple USB dongle.
Tom TTJ
Many thanks gents, what a great forum this is! I think I've found one but will be back in touch if it doesn't work. David, does this look like it should work with a version of Logic 7? Or Logic 5 if I need to source that version?
David Nahmani
David, does this look like it should work with a version of Logic 7? Or Logic 5 if I need to source that version? HAH! Well.. from the looks of it... it sure does look like the first one should work for Logic 7? Going solely by the label on it. Unfortunately I don't remember at what point the switch was made from the dark-blue dongle to the white apple dongle, or if you HAD to have the new dongle for the new versions or if you could use an older dongle and update it. Anyone here can help on this topic?
des99
The white Apple XSkey version for was late purchasers of LP7 once it was sold by Apple, but the blue emagic XSkey (introduced for LP5.x) of course worked for upgrades through Logic 7. There's no difference apart from the casing - they just needed to not give new Apple customers an emagic-branded key, which might be confusing
Tom TTJ
Ah ha. Very useful info, thanks again guys! And yes David the label might just be a giveaway ;-/
des99
There were a bunch of authorisations stored on a key - both for the platform, and the version (as well as individual plugins, before the first "Logic Pro" version, 6.4, with emagic now owned by Apple, bundled them all in with Logic - and it was like Christmas had come early ). If you had, for example a key with Win 5.x on it, this will not authorise LP6 or LP7, and it won't authorise 5.x on a Mac either. These major versions were all paid upgrades. So yes, make sure you get a key with an auth for LP7 (Mac obviously) on it, otherwise you won't be able to run LP7.

des99
You mean if you only have a key that is authorised for Logic 7.x, will Logic 5.x or 6.x run with that key? I can't remember authoritatively - probably not. But Logic 7 will open Logic 5.x or 6.x arrangements, so you should use LP7 as the universal convertor. Tommydee
Ah ok thanks des So perhaps if I just bought logic 7 cd and the dongle and installed into my g4 I could open up any previous arrangements
des99
Well yes, as you'd be using Logic 7, which as I said, will open Logic 1-7 projects just fine. But the key would need to have a Mac + Logic 7 authorisation on it to do so.
