edit: i posted this in wrong section before so i copied it here
ok so i've been using 7 for years with a firepod and a mac book pro/ external HD for audio
just finished totally revamping my studio
logic 8
mac pro (8 core intel 3ghz 6gb ram 2 internal HD 1 system 1 audio)
apogee symphony (symphony 32 card, ad16x da16x)
ok so i spent about a week twiddling around with v8 before deciding to start using it on a project. so i started recording a brand new band and set up my templates in and just started to work. 16 tracks of drums @ 24bit/96khz
at first it was cool and the only problem i had was the annoying quick comp feature on punch ins since i did not want it t quick comp so i searched here and realized i had to turn replace mode on to turn quick comp off. so i was like ok this is cool. off the bat the ability to select multiple channels with a drag of a mouse saved me so much time for recording.
so here's where things went wrong. during drums i do a lot of punch ins. after the first half of the song i started to notice it was getting sluggish. when i hit play or record or sometimes punched in on the fly it would show me the spinning thing and take 4 seconds or so to kind of spin the hard drive i guess or something before it played which is very annoying.
then it just froze. and then i restarted (all the while looking like an idiot to the band)
then the biggest problem of all happened. every 5-6 recording takes when it finished recording something i would see all the waveforms and when i went to played it a loud hiss happened of really loud and distorted white noise. i soloed the tracks and only like 4 or 5 of the tracks were like that. the waveform previews didn't look corrupt or anything but during playback they hissed.
now honestly i think this happened before like a year or ago or so IIRC but this was with a firepod so i thought it had to do with that which was ok cuz it was $500. now i am dealing with a $15,000 computer/converter system alone.
in general there have been other minor glitches here and there but i can deal with those. what happened yesterday is the biggest problem.
does anyone have insight on this??? having the type of gear i have currently, problems like this are very frustrating.
ps - i had my I/O buffer set to 64 but with just 16 audio tracks, 8 core 3 ghz should this even be a problem???
any higher and there is latency. i also never got the latency thing... the apogee system claims very low latency so do i have to sacrifice that for the sake of stability???

ok done sorry. it was kind of a broad technical question since i was having a few problems but the main one being the hiss. somehow i sense they are all related to some sort of syncing issue or maybe how everything works with the audio hard drive (separate internal) since there is a noticeable lag when i hit play...
at least to get by this project i need this noise thing not happen though, i could live with the lag, but like i said if it's due to the same problem hopefully the solution takes care of everything.
david, being the logic guru your help would much be appreciated.
thanks

| I just wanted to chime in to say I was having the same problem. I record 16 tracks at a time as well through a presonus firestudio lightpipe fed by an apogee rosetta 800 and a presonus digimax. All is clocked externally by an aardsync. I record 24bit at 44.1k. Every once in a while a handful of tracks on one take will be a blast of white noise. The region waveform looks fine. The actual audio file cannot be opened. Does anyone know of a way to fix the corruption of these files? Is it a bad header? How does one edit a header? |

Well....
.... I reopened the project this morning and Logic asked me if I wanted it to repair the damaged headers. I said yes and it took care of everything for me. I think previously I just deleted the takes because they were white noise without reopening the project. Good thing I asked this question because that made me keep the takes in case anyone had a solution.
Funny how that worked out. |

ok so those same files that were white noise, after restarting and repairing headers, were fine??
if that's the case then there is the "sort of" solution to my problem.
still doesn't explain why it happens and how to prevent it but at least i know i don't lost a good take by just chucking it under the assumption its perm. damaged like i did with a great drum fill take that i had to look like an asshole in front of the band. |

| I know! I've been throwing away takes for a while now. I hope this solves your problem, too. |
