MainStage and Live Looping

Hi,

 

I'm just wondering if/how it's possible to live loop within MainStage with a mixture of vocals, guitar and numerous other instruments. I have a tascam us-122 and a macbook. Please help. Will AU Looper work (if so it doesn't on my system)

I'd be interested in knowing myself... I'm guessing it would involve an Audio Unit of some description.

Yes, I'd love to know this too as it'll have a massive impact on whether I upgrade sooner or later...

 

Currently using 7.2.3 for live sessions but would prefer something a bit lighter on the cpu...

I should be getting Logic within a day or two via mail. If no-one answers this post I will myself.

 

I have a feeling it isn't supported yet, I don't even think you can playback an audio file.

 

I remember seeing a British solo act on MAX called Son of Sam....very impressive.

 

Basically, a guy on harmonica, first builds up a rhythm loop, I think it was done beatboxing. Then He loops his harmonica, plays another part over top, just before getting into some vocals. In which case he would create an underlying harmonica loop to sing over. Comes the break and he's at it again...

 

So he's constantly laying loops and doing stuff over top, deactivating them to do something else, and building up more layers, and all this was done over one of those very rustic vintage Honner harmonica mics... of the distorted type, even the vocals.

 

Impressive indeed, though I can't say what the rest of his stuff is like... I must look him up.

 

But my point... this has fed my with some ideas, so I have gained an interest in live looping. I'm sure he was using that Boss Loop module, the bigger one.

You can't loop live in Mainstage (since there is no recording) but you can trigger preset tracks via ultrabeat sequencer.

I must correct myself here, it was Son of DAVE!!

 

But it's a pity you can't loop, Ultrabeat is only open to looping drum patterns. What I was after was an ability to loop your output LIVE, and build up layers in that was. It really is a new kind of performance aspect people are starting to utilise. Pity we can't do it.

well technically you can loop any sample you throw into ub if you create a sequence for it although you wouldn't be able to control the tempo of say background vocals. It would be nice to see an update of mainstage that incorporates this feature.

you can load samples in the exs 24 and put select the loop mode. so if you loaded a sample, you could assign it to a key to turn it on and off. at least i think thats right.

I would guess that the neatest solution would be to use Guitar Rig2/3 and make use of the Looper module in that ...

The main point: I cannot hear what I am looping when I am performing it, but I can hear it back inside of SooperLooper during playback.

Sorry for the delay . . I'm not sure. I haven't had that problem. Ask Jesse at sooperloopr. Also, try thr sooperlooper forum-there is a lot info there.

BTW-I won't have time to reserach this so please let us know how you fair.

You could add a Delay Designer to each channel strip in a given setup. Then just have DD set on "endless repeat" for the number of bars you want each part to loop.

Yep! Its a multi-tap delay that has a number of presets that make it a decent looper.

For a while I was using the Tape Delay when I needed to loop in Mainstage. You can set it for up to 3 minutes or so if you need to! Obviously it's a pretty sketchy way to try and loop though - I don't recommend it at all - but it does the job.

Well, if you have MainStage 2.0 or newer you can use Loopback which is a plug-in that comes with MainStage that is designed specifically for sound-on-sound looping.
