Logic 8 vs. Logics Express 8 feature comparison

I know this is mostly a Pro user's forum, but I've been unable to locate on Apples's site a feature comparison between Pro 8 and Express 8 - has anyone run across run? Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, here are the only features that Logic Express does NOT have

 

- Reduced size library (no Jam Packs with Express)

- Surround support

- Hardware and System protocols NOT supported:

• TDM support

• Distributed Audio Processing

• Support for high-end professional control surfaces (Euphonix and SmartAV consoles)

- Instrument Plug-Ins:

• Sculpture

• Vintage Series: EVP88, EVB3, EVD6

- Effect Plug-Ins:

• Space Designer

• Delay Designer

• Mastering Series: Linear Phase EQ, Match EQ, Multipressor, AdLimiter, Multimeter

Ultrabeat, YES! Jam Packs, I don't think so... that's what I meant by a reduced Library.

Does anybody know if LE 8 is going to have the 12 track limit as before or did they change that?

I don't think it has any limits of that kind, but I'm really not sure.

Interesting... I remember the LP7 vs. LE7 comparison chart, and nowhere did it mention the myriad little shortcuts and workflow elements that were stripped out, like capturing last take as recording, create new track with next/same object, double-click in the background of the matrix to show all region data, low cut filters in the channel EQ, and a hundred other little things. Working with LE7 was incredibly frustrating.

 

Obviously, if one starts with LE7, they won't know what they're missing.

 

Wonder if anyone here can vouch for the difference in number of key commands in LE8 vs. LP8? If they're close, looks like we have a winner.

Yes, his statement about instruments is obviously not quite true, regarding sculpture and the vintage series. But I've noticed that already in version 7 some basic sounds/presets of EVP88 and EVB3 are available in Express (and Garageband).

 

The question remains if the overall functionality of Express 8 is restricted in any way as it was in version 7. I tend to believe that it's not the case which would be great of course.

David nailed it perfectly. I spoke to a friend of mine who worked on development and he confirmed the list David posted. The sound library is smaller primarily due to the fact that the Jam Packs are not included and there is no surorund content, content for Space Designer, Soundtrack Pro content, etc.

 

Oh yeah, of course, Logic Express does not include MainStage, Soundtrack Pro 2, Impulse Response Utility or WaveBurner.

me too..

one of the small diferences between logic express 7 and pro 7 is that i cant mute a single midi note in the matrix editor in Logic express.

 

seems like a minor detail, but a big deal to me. hope Express8 wont have those small restrictions.

David already posted a list showing the differences between Logic Express 8 and Logic Pro 8.

 

Everything else is definitely identical in both versions. A full blown Apogee Symphony system will show all available in- and outputs in Logic Express up to 192 KHz, all relevant key commands are available and so on an on...

I haven't seen Express myself, but from what I understand the differences I listed are the ONLY differences between Express and Pro.

Logic Express/Garage band do contain simplified versions of the ES2, EVB3, EVP88, ect.

 

When I upgraded to Logic Pro7, those sounds were handed off to their big brothers, so there is some sort of patch compatibility between the GB instruments and the Logic Pro instruments.

 

I was surprised to see they added the ES2.

IMO handling and workflow is the key aspect. It was really a bummer in LE that you couldn't use useful features like Pickup Clock, Capture Last Take As Recording, etc. And importing your own key commands from LP was also impossible.

 

Can anyone say whether this now works in LE8, please?

From all what I've read so far (including David's statements), Logic Pro 8 and Express 8 are basically the SAME application. I think this makes sense also from Apple's view as it simplifies the maintenance procedure. Of course, strictly speaking Express is still a different application in so far as it has less built-in instruments/effects and no support of some advanced features like eg. surround and distributed processing.

In LE7, there was a player only version of EXS24, now in 8 it's the full EXS24.

 

Installing now-and I note there references to XSKey in the application package.

 

There's also a "Logic Pro 8 legacy content" installed with Express, as well as something called Xtreme Analog sounds.

In LE7, working with movies was quite limited-as you couldn't export audio to a movie file. This can now happen with LE8.

Hi everyone, I have been browsing this site for quite some time now. Bare with me im new to Mac and Logic, i will be producing electronic music.

 

Would i be limited by the features not in LE 8 or should i just save some more money and get Logic Studio?

 

I also have a MAC mini 1.83 2gb Ram. Is sufficient to run logic? Thanks
