Hi guys, I'm looking for a synth. But not one too expensive. I want one for less then 2500 dollars. I don't necessarily need a lot of acoustic sounds. But I want it too do a lot more then Logic's software synths.
I was thinking about a Korg M50. But I have the idea that you can't tweak the sounds enough on this. (And I want to tweak sounds:p).
I also don't want a workstation. (I've already got lots of stuff here so I would be wasting money to buy a workstation.)
But I want a synth that I can use as a standalone. (I mean that I don't wanna buy multiple synths).
If anyone could help me, would be nice.
Thank you. |

I think you should look into Native Instrument products, especially the Komplete 6. For more analog style stuff, Applied Acoustics makes some pretty stellar stuff. I use TONS of Native Instrument products in my sound design, film scoring and my own electronica projects. They're pretty hard to beat and they won't break your bank.
However, if you're looking for hardware synths, then I don't really have anything to offer you, as I don't utilize a lot of hardware for my synth and sound design.

Hehe thanks for so many replies guys. I'm more into buying a hardware synth.
Is a Virus TI a good option? Does it do more than Logic?
el-bo, I will try the demo.
EDIT: But suggestions for vst's are welcome too. At least they are a lot cheaper. |

Virus Ti is awesome.
The features are great. It's intergrated into your DAW (logic). You get free software updates, when there's a major OS update you get free effects. There is a new OS coming out soon and you get six new modelled "stomp box" distortion/overdrive effects, two brand new Vowel and Comb filter effects, and lastly full step-sequencer modulation capability via Arp-to-ModMatrix
Another cool extra you get is Atomizer, a cool realtime audio slicer/dicer effect!
Best synth I have ever owned! |

i think if you are looking for something virus-like, the real thing might be best (though checking out sylenth and predator especially might save you a lot of money)..
alchemy, though offering a great VA engine is much better for all the other stuff....the handling of imported samples for destruction and it's supreme pad-machine qualities make a great compliment to others in a collection ________________________ there is no sanctuary

No, not really. But it will sound different.
Might help if you gave us some idea what kind of synthesis you're interested in.

In what way? Sampling? Modulation and control? Synthesis type? Effects? ________________________ "The sound of a harpsichord is like two skeletons copulating on a tin roof in a thunderstorm. "

No I don't need sampling. I'm just looking for more accurate sounds.
See I want some really fat sounds, or at least something you can't create with a vst. I guess that's the point of a hardware synth, and that is why it is a lot more expensive.
EDIT: Btw, What's actually the difference between desktop, keyboard and polar versions of the Virus TI? |

The best way to choose a synthesizer when you have no idea what you want and have no training whatsoever, is to go and play them. Try the Moog Voyager, the Korg Radias, Roland Juno or V-Synth, or a Clavia Nord Lead. You're bound to find one you like. ________________________ "The sound of a harpsichord is like two skeletons copulating on a tin roof in a thunderstorm. "

If you haven't already, check out Reaktor. Depending on one's knowledge and skill level, Reaktor lets you completely design everything from the ground up, even allowing you to make fully functional control interfaces for your designs, etc. It's an amazing program and the sky is literally the limit. On top of the great presets it already comes with, it really is a 'go-to' for those that really want to create something that's never been heard of before.
It has gotten to the point now that software really can do a lot more than physical synths, especially when one considers that physical synths really do have boundaries that you can't go beyond. |

+1
If we are talking about hardware...I really enjoyed playing with a V-Synth for a few weeks (One of my clients brought it in to use on a track) You can produce some really out there sounds... but my own personal favorite for tweakability is my Virus KC.....
I have a Minimoog D which is still holding up.... despite much use and abuse over the years... but I have never sat down and really played with the Voyager.... Is it as good as most people claim compared to the original? ________________________ Nigel

The first electronic music class I took was in 1974. The school had just bought a Minimoog D, a 1/4 track TEAC machine and a Fender amp. Multitracking was a bitch, but we managed!
I haven't spent a lot of time with the Voyager, but it certainly seemed to have the guts of the old ones. I'd consider getting one, given the discretionary funds are available. ________________________ "The sound of a harpsichord is like two skeletons copulating on a tin roof in a thunderstorm. "

4 actually:

Capability-wise, the Virus isn't in league with Zebra or Absynth, or even ES2 in some respects, but it is a good sounding synth. ________________________ "The sound of a harpsichord is like two skeletons copulating on a tin roof in a thunderstorm. "
