My Room (Updated w/ backwall traps +70 Pictures!)

Recommended Posts

Yeah, i thought i make thread out of this one, since i 've been ruining some free time to build Basstraps.

Good news!. First ones are ready. "we" ( big thanks to good friend of mine ) made 4 little Corner basstraps, with really light design and they look great. I can say cost estimate for one corner basstrap, was around 30-40€, price went pretty high, since i used two fabrics, which werent so cheap.

Sorry about pictures, i didnt have Photoshop on this computer (gfs laptop). I will update this thread, when the project moves on.

Frames

When the frames were ready, they looked pretty bad. Really light, small and shaky ( as you can see ). When i started filling them up with the fibre they started look much better and my confidence grew.

Fabrics; really thin whity fabric over frame and the fibre and then dark one over it, giving it nice look. I bet my gf digs them too!.

And finally, Corner Basstraps on my room. Looks good eh :).

Next project is to do wall trap over the screen, i will make new design which fits back of the painting. So, it will look llke painting, but below that is some fibre and background lights!.

Then, backwall traps and roof trap. I'm just getting started :).

Thanks for sharing this! You mentioned fibre. What kind?

Paroc COS 5. It has been used in local studios, so i though i give it a try.

Also, how did you arrive at the dimensions for the traps?

I know there are math models for calculating "best" size for the traps, but i didnt care, since my room is really bad, my goal is just to make it better. So, i just measured how large traps i can place in my corners and went with that. No stress.

Did the traps help a lot to get the sound better?

For this room, i need more traps. Atleast to cover roof and backwall. I allready draw sketch for the backwall. It's going to have five 42x120 -sized basstraps. When adding thse cornertraps, i didnt notice much difference, reverbration decreased little bit on some areas of the room.

My friend has over ten basstraps on his room and that place sounds great!. Like Ethan Winer says; more the better  .

Time to get busy again. Did some material shopping for 6 basstraps. One is going to between my corner basstraps and rest 5 are going to backwall. They will be made from lighter fiber, since they will be installed to doors. So, i'm kinda trying to make some multi purpose thing there, so you can just lift them off i you want to, maybe try different kind of setups. I will post some pictures from the process.

Here we go again!.

So, my plan was to make 5 basstraps to backwall. About 120cm x 42cm, one of the traps was bigger since one door were larger than other ones. I used 5cm thick fibre this time. I decided that i'll cover them with white fabric and afterwards choose nice expensive fabric to cover them again ( to make them look nice ), but when i had put white fabric on them - they looked pretty nice, so i decided to just leave them that way.

It is fairly simple to put another fabric on them afterwards. To make traps even more effective, i made parts which lift traps 5cm from the surface, so they have some air between the traps and surface. These should decrease amount of waves bouncing back from the back wall. Pictures follow; as you can see traps havent been aligned perfectly yet, but you get the idea. And no, they're NOT hard-installed, you can just grab them and remove.

Through the project i learnt massive amount of stuff and next time they'll be PERFECT! :D.

One thing i estimed wrong was time/hours. Took pretty much time to get all the parts and tools, but once you get going it goes pretty smoothly. So, if you want to do project like this, best way is to make them if you got few days/week free time. I spend almost few weeks, running after work and doing them every evening.

After these i will make 2 roof traps from the 10cm thick fiber, and one special trap to the front wall from 5cm thick fiber. So, after those i will have 12 bass traps on the ~10 square meter room. Enough for starters..

If you want to see all +70 pictures of the project go HERE. I will add more pictures when i i get more done. At the moment back wall traps are ready.
