Amp Designer for bass

Postby jtees » Mon Sep 27, 2010 5:26 pm

Hi all

I just bought a bass guitar and was wondering if anyone has had much success using amp designer with a bass guitar... if so, which amp models within amp designer do you recommend?

Cheers

I haven't tried it myself, but if I was going to I'd start with the large tweed.

Assuming that the large tweed is based on a Fender Bassman (which was originally a bass amp, it was just 'adopted' by guitarists) that seems like it could be a goer. I'd probably change the mic to the condenser model and move it back from the speaker for a mellower tone (depending on musical style of course - if you play punk or metal you might be inclined to do the opposite).

I've also heard of people having success with playing bass through Orange OR-120 and OD-120 amps. Assuming that the Sunshine Stack is based on one of those, that might be good for a grittier sound.

Other than that the old axiom 'use your ears' is good - if it sounds good it is good so try them all!!

I've also been surprised by Logic's rather simple but effective "Bass Amp" plug-in. You might want to start there.

Yes, you could key in a lot of good sounds with the Bass Amp plugin.

Another good thing to download is the free CabSVT plug-in from Airwindows (sigh, my secret to good low-end bass sound is now out...) A dash of the Logic compressor with A_U setting and you are done.

+1 on the "Bass Amp" plug-in. Don't let the GarageBand interface fool you.

Just curious... does anyone know what famous DI box is emulated by Bass Amp DI?

I'm giving Bass Amp some new respect, especially given how good it sounds using a DI model with a bass amp IR in SD. :D

I got a fender jazz bass with passive pickups. It was the only left handed bass in the shop I went to which made my decision really easy haha. I ended up buying the ampeg plug from ik multimedia. Sounds good.
